シキミ(shikimi) 学名：illicum anisatum. 英名：Japanese star anis.
Different from its edible counterpart illicum verum (chinese star anis), this species is toxic. Inedible, its seed can be used as an incense nonetheless. Japanese star anis, unlike its chinese counterpart, contains eugenol in its seed, which is the only way to differentiate the 2 from seeds. Eugenol is a molecule mainly found in clover. Dentists often use a mixture of Zinc Oxide and Eugenol (commonly called Zoe) as a temporary dental caries filler, having both antiseptic (zinc) and analgesic (eugenol) properties.
トウシキミ(illicum verum, chinese star anis)とは違います。これは毒なので、食用にはなりませんが、お香として利用できる。
